About the Carondelet Neighborhood

The Carondelet neighborhood has consistently been a mix of residential, light industrial, and commercial spaces. Carondelet was founded in 1767 by Clement DeLore de Treget, just north of the mouth of the River des Peres. Jacob Steins, a German immigrant acquired land south of the old French settlement in 1846. He built a home at what is now the corner of Steins and Reilly, and began encouraging other Germans to move to Carondelet.
In 1865 the population of Carondelet was 4,534. Despite this growth, in April, 1870, by act of the State Legislature, Carondelet was annexed to the City of St. Louis. The new century brought more improvements to Carondelet. Adolphus and August Busch built many taverns on the old Carondelet Commons (South Broadway and east to the river), and theses unique buildings added character to the neighborhood. It was a time of rapid growth when the Carondelet Commons was quickly filling with houses, churches, and businesses.
Today the Carondelet neighborhood features largely intact historic residential properties and business space for lease, turn of the century mixed-use South Broadway Storefronts, and easy access to Downtown and South County via I-55 providing a unique link between the City and County that few neighborhoods can offer. Recent neighborhood developments include the Loughborough Commons featuring a new Schnucks and Lowes and the Carondelet Recreation Plex a full service fitness center and pool facility managed by the YMCA.
The Carondelet Community Betterment Federation, founded in 1973, offers programs including outreach, literacy, forgivable loans and continues to aid the elderly in maintaining their homes. In 1985, the South Broadway Merchants Association opened with the goal of attracting new businesses to South Carondelet, the SBMA provides a bridge between members and city government to improve existing conditions and attract new businesses and investment to the neighborhood.
Today, community organizations and developers are refurbishing many turn-of-the-century houses, and a number of new commercial developments will bring new restaurants, shops, and entertainment to the neighborhood. With time, South Broadway will be a bustling street with restaurants and retail once again. Carondelet begins the 21st Century with about 26,000 citizens and one of the lowest crime rates in the city.
